Annabelle Riley Bryant was a vibrant 2 ½ year-old who loved life. On May 4, 2005 she was tragically killed in a “back over accident” in her driveway. While her mother and little brother watched helplessly, she was run over by a commercial vehicle that couldn’t see her as it reversed out of her driveway. Meredyth and her husband Rodney's life changed forever that day.
Through their grief, they courageously decided to establish the non-profit organization, Annabelle’s Angels. This organization promotes awareness related to child vehicle safety and specifically about Rear View Safety Lenses. The simple self-installation of this reflective device can save a child’s life.
The Bryant’s have been champions in this cause by educating the public about the alarming frequency of child deaths due to non-traffic, non-crash motor vehicle incidents. In the last five years, 1,000 children (mostly under the age of 4) have been killed in related circumstances. An average of four children per week died in 2005.
Though most parents are aware of the dangers of leaving children inside a vehicle on warm days, there are other ways children can be harmed in or around vehicles. Many child car injuries and deaths include back over and front over accidents when a driver cannot see a child from inside their vehicle. Most of these accidents are caused by SUVs, vans, and larger trucks. Also, rollaway incidents occur when children are left inside the car without an adult and they intentionally or unintentionally shift the car into gear. Finally, kids can inadvertently become trapped and strangled by power windows when left unsupervised.
Parents know the importance of paying attention while driving, especially with children in the car. Annabelle’s Angels is working to increase all drivers’ awareness - when children are outside of the car too.
