Kids Clubhouse-TitlesTHE BFG By Roald Dahl Sophie and the BFG try to mix dreams together to convince the Queen of England that giants are real. Most of the story takes place in Giant Country, but the BFG and Sophie sneak to the palace to surprise the queen. We liked the story. These are our favorite parts: "My favorite part was when Sophie poked her brooch into the Fleshlumpeater's foot so the BFG could tie him up." (Grace) "My favorite part was when the BFG was trying to get through the palace door for breakfast." (Matthew) "I liked the whizzpopping the best." (Anthony) "I liked when the BFG took Sophie to his cave and explained to her about Giant Country." (Jennifer) "My favorite part was when the BFG finally got an elephant." (Camille) We recommend this book to children who like funny, adventurous stories that are a little scary, but not too scary for a second grader. The Chocolate Touch By Patrick Skene Catling John has a problem. He eats too much candy. On the way to his friends house, John finds a one-of-a-kind coin. One side has a picture of a fat boy, the other side has the initials J.M. (his initials). At first, John thinks finding the magic coin is the best thing ever. But then he learns and important lesson about chocolate. "My favorite part was when John hides the box of chocolate under his bed." (James) "My favorite part was when John said to the storekeeper, "...I-kissed-my-mother-and-now-she's-chocolate-and-I've-got-to-change-her-back!" (Amu) "I liked when John's mom turned into chocolate. I wish I could turn my mom into chocolate." (Morgan) "I thought it was funny when John says his toothpaste is chocolate." (Nicki) "It was interesting when John turned his mom into chocolate." (Sydney) "My favorite part is when John drinks the medicine and it turns into chocolate and so does the spoon. And the doctor tells him he's "chocolatified". (Elisabeth) If you love chocolate, you'll love this story because it's all about chocolate. We recommend it! Freckle Juice by Judy Blume Andrew wants freckles really badly so that his mother won't see the dirt on his neck and he won't have to take a bath. He asks Nicky, a boy in his class, how he got his freckles. Nicky says, "You get born with them. That's how!" But as they line up, Sharon whispers to Andrew, "Psst...I know how to get them." Andrew gets the secret Freckle Juice recipe and tries it out. I wonder if it works? 1- "Yes, I like the book alot. I like it when the class lines up to go home and Sharon tells Nicky she knows how to get rid of freckles." (McKenzie) 2- "This book is outstanding. My favorite part was when Andrew made the secret recipe and he drank it and started turning greenish." (Everett) 3- I like the book because Andrew turns greenish and he actually believed Sharon and followed the secret recipe." (Kelli) 4- "I like when Andrew holds his nose when he drinks the Freckle Juice." (Hannah) 5- "I liked reading Freckle Juice and my favorite part is when Andrew drinks the gross Freckle Juice. I would never drink it, though." (Meher) We recommend this book to kindergartener's, 1st graders, and second graders. It's funny , interesting, part of it is gross, and it didn't take that long to read. |
